| This page is part of the Pasco County Historical
Preservation Society Inc. web site and is dedicated to the book "A
Frenchman in Florida: notes of travel", which was
originally published in France in 1889 under the French title "Un
Francais dans La Floride: notes de voyage". This French book
recounts the travels of the author and poet Edmond Johanet, who in 1885
traveled from New Orleans to Jacksonville, from Jacksonville to
Wildwood, and then from Wildwood to Hernando and Pasco Counties where
most of his adventurous writings took place. During his venture
Edmond
encountered many local residents and their pioneer ways of life in
Florida, which was greatly different then that of the French.
Eventually Edmond acquired his own property in Hernando County
and soon began the task of building a town, which was to carry his name
by being called Johanetville. This book not only recounts
Edmond's adventure through
Florida but it tells of a time past and now serves as an excellent
historical resource. Being published in France the entire book was originally written in french and to our knowledge has never been translated to English, until now! Special thanks are given to all of thsoe who assisted in this project through contributions of their time and knowledge by translating the original works of Edmond Johanet, it was their dedication that made this translation possible. Each contributor will be cited within the respective chapters that they worked on. NOTE: While we are working on translations of the entire book, only those chapters that pertain to the history of Pasco and Hernando Counties have been made available here.
